Pizza of the Pharos

21 Apr

Mistresses of the night, pawn shops galore, Buffet Royale, grungy adult stores, some other weird stuff, and the list goes on. These are just a couple of things that are on the famous gritty Stony Plain Road. Along with those on the “eclectic” avenue of Stony Plain Road, Pharos Pizza has reopened a small sliver to serve up some great slices of za for your eating delight. Heck it even has great window seats for people watching ! But if you don’t want to sit in the small seating area upstairs (I’m talking one table and some bar stools) you can go downstairs and eat the full menu at Haven Social Club, though you might have to pay some cover. The menu here is pretty small, I came here after many message boards and rumors of people saying that Pharo’s has the best pizza blah blah blah. But what was the most common comment was that the sauce was legendary and the Spinach pizza was to die for.

I made the trip to Pharo’s one fine afternoon with a trusty groupon in hand and ordered the Pharo’s Chef Special. There isn’t too much selection besides your O.G. pizza so I figured I would get fancy. The girl attending the counter was amazing, she had a quirky sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to joke around with us which I really appreciate. Usually the run of the mill counter attendant hates their life and just want you to order and go.

Our pizza took a good 15 minutes where the owner I’m assuming kind of chatted us awkwardly by saying things like, “OHHHH So it’s your first time here eh?” and I had made a comment about the cover at Haven and I got kind of a snarky remark back about, “Well that’s how the band gets paid” dealio. While we were waiting we ordered some fries which seemed bottomless. $2.95 for a giant cone, wowza! Finally our za came out and I wheeled home fast to devour the pizza which was delivering such a gorgeous intoxicating scent. The pizza was cut unconventionally, in squares so you got to have some pieces with no crust ! (YES!)

SOMEBODY, jumped the gun before I got to take a picture so there’s a slice missing haha. The dough had a great yeasty flavor to it and there was no myth about the legendary sauce. This sauce was tangy, zesty, and packed with a really fresh tomato taste that each bite became more and more addicting. ( Luckily we put half the pizza away) And hands down this is the best pepperoni I have ever had in my life, it was stacked so thick in and had a great spice mix on it! But alas, I don’t think I would get this pizza again. I think I would get more original flavors along the lines of just pepperoni because it was out of this world. Do you remember the last time you had JUST a pepperoni pizza? I don’t.

Oil City

4 Apr

All of you are shuddering and waiting for me to say “Roadhouse” next but you’re in luck, I wasn’t in a room with greasy guys and gals, it was a room of food grease, and not the good kind. Mom was so kind to get me a coupon book for Edmonton for my birthday so I had a $10 off for Syphay Restaurant on Calgary Trail. With the outside decor looking like a ratty house from the 80s the inside was decorated beautifully, purple walls washed over with cute red tablecloths. The warmth of the decor along with friendly staff made me feel right at home instantly. This was a fairly small restaurant, maybe 12 tables tops so it was pretty much a full house when we got there.

After we were seated we got cups of water and our menus, which I found to be unnecessarily long. So many of the “Pad” dishes were so similar and were either switching or adding another vegetable in. The language barrier really played a hard game this time because I asked our waitresses what one of the curries was like she just re-read me what was on the menu. We ended up going with Deep Fried Curry Chicken, idea was very compelling.. and did not disappoint flavor-wise. Unfortunately the toughness of the chicken led me the believe that it was either horrendously overcooked or a horrible grade. There was no way you could eat it without looking like an animal. Besides that, the flavor was great and so was the crispiness to each bite.

Shortly after we finished our mains came out. Once the yellow curry was put on the table I was instantly turned off. A pool of oil had already formed on top separating from the curry, eyeballing it I would say a tablespoon and a half. Fortunately the flavor made up for the oil resting on top. Not quite worth the $15 price tag, there was maybe two or three whole small potatoes in it with some chicken pieces here and there. We also got one of the “pad” dishes, which had crispy chicken,  some vegetables and cashews. Unfortunately pretty much all of those were missing from this dish, they should have just listed batter and miscellaneous kitchen items. Out of all the chicken maybe 20% of it was meat, rest was all just batter that when you bit into it, oil rushed into your mouth. Gross. There were a couple strips of red and green pepper, carrots and maybe 5 or 6 cashews on top. No flavor besides whatever was cooked in the pan last. At least it looked like it was going to be appetizing! Oh and did I mention that a small container with enough rice for two was $7? (You can kind of see how big it is in the silver container in pictures below) I know I sound whiny complaining about everything like this but seriously ! It was really not enjoyable and  I really did not like myself after eating. So greasy. I’d rather eat McDonald’s for that amount of grease and pay a fraction of the price.

Lassoing Burgers 101

29 Mar

Giddy up university students, if you haven’t been recruited into the Rodeo Burger circle yet, you’re missing out on precious calories. Rodeo Burgers is conveniently placed right by the university, across from the U of A hospital, and a hop and a skip away from quite a bit of residential area. After a couple weeks of looking at the menu, watching too many burger shows and countless munchies I finally made an excuse to head to the university area. It has taken over a spot on the 112 street area where a former Chinese restaurant was, Pearl Jade Restaurant if I’m not mistaken, and has become a perfect lunch/take out place for anyone that works/learns/lives in the area. One of the more interesting things about Rodeo Burger is that it has a selection of beer, not a huge selection, but a selection nonetheless. Their burgers here are fresh and handmade so expect lots of love to go in your burger, this isn’t your everyday fast food joint so expect to wait a little longer too.

When you come in you see a pretty simple menu, a couple pre-made burgers as well as customizable ones which is what makes Rodeo Burger stand out. When the counter attendant noticed the side swiping of the eyes over all the selection she asked if this was our first time here, offered help, explained some of the burgers and then asked where we heard of Rodeo Burgers, it was really nice that they offer assistance because indecisive people would be in line for ages. Of course after thinking about this place for so long it only makes sense I went with a customizable one. There was a huge selection of toppings, apparently it wasn’t even all they had just what they decided to list, along with a lot of condiment choices, and combo up with seasoned or sea salt fries and a refillable drink for 10 bones. Not too shabby !

No more then ten minutes later I received my mountain of burger. I apologize for the not so great pictures, I was sitting in the window for prime people watching seating.

The fry layout was awesome, it gave you more then the typical, “fill up the container” portion, they were scattered around the tray as well.  The fries were really crisp on the outside and REALLY soft on the inside. They were so addicting it was hard not to fill up on them before trying any burger. I went with the sea salt fries which were okay, you got more of the real french fry potato flavor rather then with the seasoned ones you got salt mouth. Now onto the burger.

This burger was big, heavy, and ready to roll into my mouth. First bite and I was in heaven. Second bite sort of falling out of heaven. Third bite, it was pretty good but definitely not the best burger I’ve had. I usually really enjoy caramelized onions but the onions on here gave it a sort of slimy texture but it was pretty easy to get over. The relish was really enjoyable for me, the cucumbers looked almost like they were cut fresh and put in for your crunchy pleasure. This burg was extremely filling, I’m surprised I finished.

Rodeo Burgers is decently priced and you are definitely getting the “bang for your buck” here. It’s nothing to call home about for flavor but the experience itself is unique (for now) and has been added to my list of “hate yourself for being too full”.

Here I’m going to shamelessly promote myself and ask you to like me on facebook.

Edmonton’s Elite

25 Mar

Edmonton’s first Yelp Elite event was hosted at Flirt Cupcakes last night and I was in attendance ! Every guest was greeted by Crystal, “Yelp Ambassador” from Vancouver and Brittany, Edmonton’s very own Community Manager. After mingling with these two you were shuffled to the back to get yourself a drink, Red Stripe Beer from Irie Foods as well as Cupcake wine from Flirt, red or white! This cupcake wine really has nothing to do with cupcakes besides the fact that it was at Flirt Cupcakes. I didn’t get to have a glass until the end of the night but I really enjoyed it. I’m not much of a wine drinker but I am pretty specific as to what I like. It was really smooth, I’d even say silky to drink and it was sweet just how I like it. Not cupcake sweet but it was definitely up my alley ! And you’re able to purchase it at a couple stores around town for just $10 a bottle ! After getting our drinks we moved even more into the back, where the magic happens ;). With a selection of vanilla and chocolate cakes (may have been more selection but that’s all I saw) you were also given the selection of butter cream icings to choose from, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. AND THEN.. you could even sprinkle them ! Now my last experience at Flirt was horrendous, I was at the newly opened Londonderry mall location and the icing on my cupcakes was very plasticy tasting.. Last night was a whole new experience, it was sweet, and butter cream! And everyone knows how much I despise butter cream.. but it was really good ! Not too sweet, didn’t hurt my teeth at all haha !

And right after this I made my way to the cupcake tray and munched out hard !

The next little bit was just meeting fellow yelpers and mingling and then Packrat Louie showed up to the party with crab cakes and Moroccan jumbo shrimp! The crab cakes were awesome but the shrimp were just OK, kind of bland ! I apologize for the horrendous quality picture but I was standing behind glass !

Shortly after food came, Sonic’s Band of the month, Sister Gray came and played a four song acoustic set, not my style but it was pretty good! They both had really nice voices.  A couple raffle prizes were drawn and the evening was concluded. Lots of us stuck around and mingled, got to know each other, awkward conversations, swapping food gems, and thanked Flirt owners for having us.

And to conclude, here’s me munchin out on some shrimp with a shit eating grin !

Won Jung what?

22 Mar

Won Jung Gak. One of the cities gems hidden away in the industrial area going south just off 99 street. Caught off by the buildings looks on the outside, many people would get scared away into thinking it was a really grime filled restaurant.

Once you get inside though, you’ll feel like you’re being welcomed into your own grandma’s restaurant. You walk in and you are greeted by incredible friendly staff and a large bookcase filled with books, magazines, or even anime if you’re into that. The little restaurant was filled with red tables and chairs and towards the back down a narrow hallway were lime green bathrooms. If you’re a tall person you’ll be bending down to use the sinks here, and even lower to check yourself out in the mirror ! If you had the chance to go to Motoraunt before it closed you would feel the exact same about this place, cute, humble, and amazing staff. We were seated with tea and menus and started to flip through, most of it we had no idea really what we were going to get so we kinda just winged it as to what sounded the best. We ended up going with Korean BBQ Short Ribs, Noodles in black bean sauce for two, and Deep Fried Chicken in red pepper and garlic sauce.

Shortly before our food arrived we got three small dishes to go with our noodles, I had to ask her to explain what it was and what it was for so this was the best broken english explanation I could get. “A dish sort of like kim chi, but it’s not kim chi, pickled radish and onions to dip in the black bean sauce” I really enjoyed the pickled radish, it had a nice sweet taste with a crunch to it and cleaned your palate before taking a bite of something different. We also got a set of tongs and scissors which we soon found came in handy.

Soon after this the rest of our dishes came out, chicken, noodles and then ribs.

I was first to try the chicken, the scent was sweet and spicy along with a very mild mixed herb smell. There was just the right amount of batter on the chicken and it was extremely flavorful with a very strong kick, as well as all of the herbs tasted like they were very fresh. The noodles I found a bit bland and it had bits of daikon mixed in, but as I ate them they became more flavorful, and even MORE flavorful after sitting in the fridge for a day after. The noodles were very hard to pick up with just the tongs so grabbing a bunch and then cutting off excess, we now understood why we got these tools. The short ribs were amazing, our waitress had come by and offered to cut our ribs for us because she wasn’t doing anything else. Now how often do you receive service like that? Most servers would end up sitting in the back texting on their phones until you were done! The ribs had a great mix of satay sauces and had an excellent ratio of fat:meat. I’ve never experienced a meal like this before so I was really mind blown by the food. We managed to get through about half of our meal before we threw in the towel. Our bill came to $53, not bad for two! And being able to have this for two meals ! As we were leaving we saw the owner/cook come out and make small talk with some other customers while cutting their ribs. This place definitely should not be overlooked, it has gotten me thinking about going back there constantly in the last week. If you’re looking to venture into something different, Wong Jung Gak can definitely deliver!

Bubba lover

19 Mar

It was a cold windy Thursday afternoon, my heart was racing and my mouth was watering. I have been waiting for this afternoon for a long time. Bubba’s BBQ & Smoke House. Having dreams about it, day dreaming, hell, I asked to get off work early in advance to make this day happen.  Did I mention I had to drive 45 minutes to get here too? After asking around and telling people about my BBQ fantasy dreams I was directed to an Edmonton Journal article about a “meat wagon” in an industrial area. I was instantly excited, I’ve never had anything like this from an outside source, just home cooked. And let’s face it, everything is better when someone makes it for you. Bubba has set meals for each day of the week, being only open from 11:30AM till 2:00PM or until he’s out of food so you better get there as early as you can so you don’t face the let down of him running out of meat ! Each meal for $11 comes with a generous portion of whichever meat and two sides which change so you never know what you’ll get until you go. When I went I got rice and beans but over hearing people in line you could get potato salad, or even cornbread ! Anyways, enough rambling, let’s get on to my adventure of devouring this.

Arriving at about 12:30 there were about eight people in front of us. The guy in front of us was a chatty Cathy so he was saying it generally takes about three minutes per person, also depending on how many orders we get. Thankfully the most anyone got was two, but the girl behind us said she was behind someone that got 14 once! As we got closer to the window, warm drafts of sweet barbecue swept against our noses, taunting us with it’s tantalizing scent. Finally we reach the window after about 25-30 minutes we got the direct draft of this scent. His shack was adorned with smokers, pressure cookers, ovens, and tons of meat cook books. Two heavy meals of brisket and a pepsi came to only $23! Crazy cheap! Excited to eat, I scurried back to my car, put my seat all the way back and rolled up my sleeves. This was going to be awesomely messy.

An extremely generous portion of brisket was slopped onto a very soft bun along with a side of rice and baked beans. I dug into the beans first, sweet and had a bits of brisket strewn around for extra added flavor. The rice was sub par, kind of bland but was a nice break from the flavors of the beef and beans. First bite of the brisket, my eyes roll into the back of my head as I look at my partner who is equally in love. The brisket was melting in my mouth. Smoked to perfection, moist, flavorful, insert another mouthwatering adjective here, I’ve never had anything like this before. All those fantasy dreams of watching Man Vs. Food and Diners, Drive -ins, and Dives had just come true. Don’t be shy to come here. It’s a drive (for me anyways) but is well worth it. I can’t wait to go back and try all of the other delights of the week !

Pa Peterson you failed me!

18 Mar

Pa Peterson’s ice cream.. located right beside the Value Village on the west end..hiding in its shady shack exterior I don’t think many people look twice. I’ve always eyeballed this place before going and digging around peoples old clothes but have never ventured in. Well today I took the plunge and kept plunging…and plunging.. and plunging.

Pulling up I was drooling because of the excitement, once I opened the door I was instantly hogging all the oxygen. There were 3 other people in the cramped order area waiting for their food and it was awkward to get around to check out the ice cream flavors. The walls were adorned with ice cream and popsicle posters with prices and the back counter had TONS of candy, seriously, a kids wet dream. The menu had a pretty big selection for the size of this place and once I glanced at the prices, “I’m just going to get some ice cream” turned into “I’m going to get a burger, fries and ice cream” Nobody says no to a $1.50 burger. So we ordered our food which was followed by, “THAT’S IT?” “Ummm, yes” “THATS IT” Mumbling to himself as he scoops my ice cream he hands me my double scoop cherry cheesecake cone and grumpily says $7.50. The price brings hope back into my eyes as he shuffles to the back to create my grease.

A few minutes later he yells out our order, really, we’re right in front of you, can just hand it over with a smile and say thanks.. But nope, we got yelled at, handed our food and he’s back to the back. This service is garbage, I mean he must have a really specific clientele that doesn’t mind this because there’s no way it would stay afloat. Scurrying back to the car, we opened up our fries to a package that looked like some McCain crinkle cut with some weird milky gravy on top. Taste was okay, nothing special, flavor got kind of sickening after a bit.. Went back in to get ketchup and he gave us TWO. TWO packets of ketchup. REALLY? Making due with what we got we started the bun. Er, I mean the burger. The millimeter burger in a one inch bun. Surprisingly not dry the burger looked extremely unappetizing. A weird brown red color burger mixed with a couple condiments was a salty flavorless bite. Sauce was all you could taste,  you would probably have to get a triple patty for any flavor. The ice cream was way too sweet. After about 2 bites it was just too much for one person. The graham crackers that were in it seemed stale or frost bitten, it was like I dropped my ice cream cone on the beach and someone just put it back on like it never happened.

We finished maybe half of it between the two of us and couldn’t do anymore. After a little bit our tummies started to hurt, maybe from all the grease or salt, who knows ! Thanks for ruining my burger fantasy Pa Peterson!

The Wrong Route at the Wrong Time

16 Mar

Do you like grease? Are you generally always hung over on the weekend? I have a solution for you ! Route 99 !  This place has a wonderful 50’s diner feel to it with a huge side of greasy spoon. Route 99 has a meal for whatever craving you have as well as a meal for any time of the day ! I usually only look at their menu options but lately I have been exploring their lunch and dinner menu. Another thing I keep returning for is the ambiance this place sets. I feel that I can come with greasy uncombed hair and in my pajamas and no one would really care too much. It’s so close to Whyte you’re bound to run into at least ONE weirdo here..

In my recent visit I got the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich with fries and coleslaw ($8.99). Unfortunately I went down the wrong path and went with the hot mustard. Now there was nothing wrong with this mustard, it just really wasn’t what I was expecting. It wasn’t so much packed in the flavor as it was in your senses. Breathing in while eating was a huge mistake because it cleared my sinuses in an instant and my eyes watered. But the meat was still really good and flavorful, so I’ll have to remember for next time..no hot mustard..My partner got the Reuben, again, hot mustard.. but there were so many more flavors in the Reuben that it kind of masked the hot mustard so it was much better I found. The coleslaw here seems like it has TONS of dressing on it, but fret not, it is just the perfect amount. It almost tastes like it was prepared fresh because there was still a bit of crunch in every bite. Now the fries.. these little spuds are no joke, they’re addicting as hell and I have never wasted one. Soft on the inside and a crispy bite on the outside.. Dip these spuds into the gravy here and you’ll be in fry heaven. I don’t like gravy at many places but Route 99 makes a mean gravy. All in all, take a chance on Route 99, the parking lot will probably be full on mornings on the weekend but it is definitely worth waiting for.

The Sushi Itch

11 Mar

There’s nothing I love more then being satisfied in less then 30 minutes… and Ichiban Japanese Cuisine was able to do that for me. Finding places to eat in the west end of Edmonton is really weird for me. There’s all these secret gems everywhere.. all these random strip malls  and you really just never know.. I mean with the location of Ichiban I would have never looked twice if I hadn’t heard anything about it before. The outside is almost grubby looking, like when you see generic chinese restaurants boasting 9 item combos with over 30 items to choose from grubby. The surrounding area really does not help it’s outside vibe either, but once you enter you’re greeted by warm colors and a cute little restaurant. We went there around 8:30pm (yes I am one of those dreaded late night diners, please don’t spit in my food) and there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant. We ordered some green tea to start once we were seated and when he brought our tea he asked if we were ready to place our order, I found this pretty hasty, which didn’t improve through out the night but I do appreciate the quick service if I was ready.

After looking over the menu for a few minutes we decided on Spicy Tuna Rolls, Lava Lava Roll (BBQ eeq & avocado), Dynamite Rolls and my favorite *drum roll* Toro sushi. Toro (tuna belly) is almost a deal breaker at any restaurant for me, if it’s not good, I’m really discouraged to go back because it’s my favorite kind to get and if I can’t have it I’m not happy. Now here’s the semi embarrassing part, shortly after we ordered I went to the bathroom, now the flags hanging at the back have the men and ladies right beside each other so when I got to the back the side with the ladies flag on it was actually an emergency exit, so I just assumed was just a flag saying “here are the 1 person co-ed bathrooms”. Nope. And it still didn’t click as I used the bathroom with the urinal beside the toilet. When I was done I ran into one of the employees whom was taking out garbage right as I was coming out and there was surely a smirk. Turning to go down the hallway I feel my ears get hot as I walk by the ladies bathroom on my left…the first door.. which I should have seen.

Anyways, once back in the restaurant area my food is just coming to my table and I have already forgotten that little mishap. I apologize ahead of time, we were really hungry and jumped the gun so 2 of the spicy tuna and lava lava rolls are missing before I took the picture..haha….Anyways, as you see here starting from top to bottom you have spicy tuna, dynamite then lava lava.

The dynamite rolls were pretty sub par, they tasted a little bit old, like maybe someone canceled their order or.. a popular menu item that wasn’t so popular that night was made… regardless it didn’t have too much flavor, I have definitely had better and there wasn’t too much of a crunch to the tempura that was inside. The spicy tuna rolls were like butter in your mouth. Spicy, fishy butter. Packed with flavor and cheap ($3.50 I believe) I could have ate a million of these.  The only thing I didn’t care for was that the seaweed was a bit tough in comparison to the buttery texture of everything else. The lava lava rolls were a flavor explosion. As in this roll just took the flavor bus to flavor country, it exploded and this is what became of it. The crispiness of the eel contrasted with the softness of the avocado was amazing. A crunch in one bite, smooth in the next. The sauce that was drizzled all over perfected this roll and I would definitely get it again. I would probably get many of them. And last but definitely not least, the toro. One of the pieces was cut kind of funny so presentation was already -1 for me.. but they redeemed themselves with not having a skimpy cut ! I took my first bite. Expectations met. Satisfied. Melted like butter in my mouth like it was supposed to. The flavors wrapped themselves around my tongue and rainbows danced with unicorns. But even after all this, we still weren’t full (this could be because of the illicit substance inhaled before) so we ordered one more roll to share. The Mexican. And in less then five minutes this showed up at our table:

Which again, forgetting to take a picture, we both ate one first. Tightly and neatly rolled. I can be so bold as to say that these are the best mexican rolls I have ever had. The crunch from the tempura was addicting. The salmon was spiced perfectly so neither of us had awkward sweat drops or were needing a glass of milk. Now I forgot to mention that in between the time of finishing our first order, I had just put the last piece of sushi in my mouth and our waiter was already at our table and asked if we wanted to order more. This really did not impress me one bit, but I just asked for some time to sit and digest. Regardless, food was quick, service was hasty but good and the price was right, $38 for everything that including tip.  This sushi itch was cured with Ichiban Restaurant and if I’m ever itchy again I’ll be sure to return!

The Pint

8 Mar

Bedazzled shirts glimmered in the moonlight, spikey hair bobbed amongst the crowd, and the scent of delicious chicken wings drenched in sauce enveloped The Pint on Wednesday night. Finally a Wednesday night when I drive by and there isn’t a huge line up…And to top it off there is a parking spot right in front! My mouth was watering already as I handed my ID to the bouncer, all I have heard were great things about the wings here and I couldn’t wait to sit down and devour them. Surprisingly it was pretty dead inside regarding the line ups I’ve seen and all the buzz I have heard, but not so surprising there were no clean tables.  Upon sitting down at one of the dirty tables our waitress was by within a minute or two to clean everything up and take our drink orders. While half hoping there were going to be drink specials…there weren’t any, so we sucked it up and got a domestic ($5) and an import ($7). I was really surprised at how much they had on tap, even though some of them were repeats (Rickard’s Red/White etc.) so I didn’t bother asking about the bottles they had.

Upon opening the menu we were greeted with an awesome selection for 40 different flavors to indulge in. They were all categorized by how hot they were and also by sauce or dry rub as well as boneless or classic. We ended up going with two of the medium heat ones, Sweet Chili and Mongolian BBQ. After some awkward banter our wings were out within 5-10 minutes! The scent coming off the Mongolian BBQ was mouth watering, and the sauce didn’t disappoint one bit. Now I know if you go try it you’ll probably just say its hot BBQ sauce and honey garlic, which I don’t doubt it is, but the fact that you don’t have to make it, is what makes it taste so so good. Sweet Chili was really sub par so I don’t feel the need to divulge there.  But both of the wings were drenched in the just the right amount of sauce and the wings crisped perfectly. The price was definitely right for all of this too, 1 dom 2 imports and 2 baskets of wings for $26 ! And the service was impeccable here ! Extremely fast ! We were in and out of here within 30 minutes. I’ll definitely be returning, the food and service was too great not to and there is way too many things on the menu I am stoked to try. ( I apologize for no pictures, I’ll be sure to take some next time !)
